HELP NEGLECTED OLD AGE PEOPLES OF OUR FOUNDATION

Over two-thirds of elderly people in Sri Lanka say they are neglected by their family members while one third of the elderly claimed to have suffered physical or verbal abuse, with those in urban areas bearing the brunt more than in the rural areas, according to a new study.

A study titled “Human Rights of Elderly : A critical Reflection on Social Development” released recently by NGO conducted interviews of 5,000 elderly people . The in-depth study aimed at culling out nuances of social changes as it impacts the life conditions and life standards of the elderly in families. Main respondents of the study were old persons above the age of 60 living with their families.

“65.2 per cent of elderly respondents claimed that older persons face neglect in old age. Over half i.e. 54.1 per cent respondents said that older persons suffer elder abuse in their families or society. Every fourth elderly, i.e. 25.3 per cent elderly admit that older persons are being exploited by their family members,” the study said.

In all, 89.7 per cent respondents out of 2710 respondents facing elder abuse reportedly said elderly face mistreatment in old age mostly due to financial reasons. A total of 96.5 per cent of elderly abused respondents claimed that they face mistreatment due to emotional factors

Due to rapid modernization, spared of materialistic values and breakdown of joint family system, migration of working population and young to urban areas has further adversely affected elderly care, says the study Sri Lanka after decades of independence is still struggling to provide basic health care facilities to its citizens.

Provisions for basic health care services especially in rural Sri Lanka today are few and far between. It’s an understood reality that the elderly fall way behind in receiving these services.

SPONSOR MEALS FOR DESTITUTE ELDERS

In all busy, public places like railway stations you will find them –very old and destitute people begging or simply wandering around. Have you spared a thought as to how they survive how do they get food and shelter for the cold nights? Most sleep in pavements and survive on alms, neglected by their family.

If a poor and destitute old person is provided at least one wholesome meal in a day, she has a chance to face the challenges of her hard life. Ever Grace foundation has conducted surveys around Colombo and identified and Suburbs many such elders who need help.

Most are homeless, or live in huts but do have means to cook. Under this program, with our limited resources, we are planing to provide nutritious midday meals to 20 poor old people from slums in Colombo and Gampaha District, every day.

SPONSOR A DESTITUTE ELDERS WOMAN

Elderly women who are poor and live alone or with dependent children find them vulnerable, powerless and are neglected by their family or grown up children. Many are too old or physically weak and thus unable to find work. They are forced to beg, and are often homeless.

Moved by the plight of destitute single women, Ever Grace foundation has taken up program of sponsoring elderly women on an urgent basis. Our volunteers and staff members conducted surveys and identified 74 destitute women who are 60 and above year of age.

These elderly women are widows or have been abandoned by their husbands. Some have children, but the children live apart and do not take care of their mothers. They do not have money for food, medical care and other basic necessities. HEALTH CAMPS

Sri Lanka after decades of independence is still struggling to provide basic health care facilities to its citizens. Provisions for basic health care services especially in rural Sri Lanka are few and far between. It’s an understood reality that the elderly fall way behind in receiving these services.

ELDER HELPLINES

The older generations find themselves living alone, lonely and often with no one to speak to or seek help from in cases of medical or other emergencies. On the other hand, those elderly who still live with their immediate family find themselves strangers in their own house, shunned by their near ones and often abused only because they are old and cannot take care of their own needs.

In these cases, the old are denied their Right to Dignity. The Toll-free Ever Grace Foundation Senior Citizen Helpline offers assistance to older persons in need of care and protection.

It links the elderly to services and resources for long-term solution to their problems. Hiplines provide information regarding medical assistance and emergency services; gives advice, guidance and support in calls related to dispute and elder abuse. Through the helpline, senior citizens have easy access to professional help from volunteer medical specialists, financial specialist, legal advisers, family counselors and psychologists.

The helpline also coordinates with the police, NGOs, government agencies, Ever Grace old age homes and centers working for the older persons. Ever Grace Foundation Elder Hiplines will be operated from diffrents locations across the nation.

LIVELIHOOD SUPPORT

In Sri Lanka, 12.3% of the population is aged 60 or older, In just 15 years, more than one in four – or 25% of Sri Lankans – will be over 60. The demographic transition from a youth bulge to an aging society creates several economic, health and social challenges. Out of the seniors, most of them are living alone, and 80 per cent work for their livelihood.

The number of elderly women is more than that of elderly men. Nearly three out of five single older women are very poor, and two out of three rural elderly women are fully dependent on others for want of appropriate livelihood opportunities towards economic security.

With poor social security arrangements for the elderly, it is not surprising that around 18% elderly in Sri Lnaka need to work in order to survive.
